Southeastern Climbers Coalition

I have been active in the Southeastern rock climbing community since 2018. In 2022 I joined the SCC in an official capacity as an intern, where I quickly became an integral volunteer in the organization by writing social media posts. In 2023 I was inducted into the organization’s Education Committee, which seeks to educate and inform on best practices for outdoor climbing ethics. I am proud to volunteer for an organization that strives to protect resources I am passionate about.

Goals

The SCC aims to educate climbers in an engaging, non-confrontational way on how they should act at climbing areas. They take an approach that is informative while also being light-hearted, reflecting the very feeling of the sport we love. With this in mind, my content aims to inform in a concise, easily-accessible manner.

Blogs

As part of their Empowerment campaign, which encourages climbers to speak up within their circles about outdoor ethics, the SCC enlisted my help for a series of blog posts. These blogs aim to give readers useful information that doubles as what climbers should be doing to protect crags and wilderness areas. You can read one of my blog posts here.

Social Media

During and after my internship, I was tasked with writing social media posts about best practices for climbing. These posts reached the SCC’s audience of over twelve thousand followers and were well-received by the community for their concise, useful information. You can read one of my Instagram posts here.

Webpages

During my internship, I worked on the SCC’s website, which catalogues the numerous climbing areas that the organization owns and manages. I helped write several of the descriptions for these areas, painting a picture that informs climbers what to expect as well as getting them excited for the trip ahead. You can read one of my area descriptions here.

Results

My writing work with the SCC has helped improve the quality of content pushed out to the community as well as helped them organize future writing endeavors. My “Know Before You Go” master document, a list of rule-of-thumb guidelines for climbers, is still used internally in the organization as a reference point. In addition, my writing itself has received acclaim from the community.
